Hirst Welfare and Newbiggin Sports Centre Reopen

The Hirst Welfare Centre in Ashington and the Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre reopened their doors to the public this week.

The centres have been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and have re-opened with stringent new hygiene, cleaning and social distancing practices in place to keep customers and staff safe and well.

To ensure that numbers in the classes are limited and social distancing can be adhered to, all sessions must be pre-booked online. This can be done via the Active Northumberland App or website www.activenorthumerland.org.uk  or by ringing 01670 620200.

At Hirst Welfare, initially only the gym will be opening. At Newbiggin, initially only the gym and cycling suite will be opening.

Northumberland County Councillor, Jeff Watson, cabinet member with responsibility for Healthy Lives said:
“Sport and leisure centres have a key role to play during this pandemic as exercise plays such a huge part in improving people’s physical and mental health.

“Health, hygiene and safety remain the top priority and that is why the centres have been reopened on a phased basisI hope the thorough measures that have been put in place will provide residents with the confidence to pick up their fitness regimes with us where they left off in March. I know Active Northumberland staff are really looking forward to welcoming customers back.”

Mark Warnes, Acting Chief Executive of Active Northumberland said:

“ While the centres have been closed we have been working very hard behind the scenes to implement many new health and hygiene measures to keep both our customers and staff safe.

“We have been following government guidance and industry advice and have a really robust system in place which I hope our customers will find reassuring.”
